Topic: Why where you build your telescope matters so much. Abstract: I will discuss how the environment surrounding a telescope impacts the science it can perform. I will begin with a brief overview of optical telescopes and their relocation outside of cities, along with the importance of special environments like Atacama. The bulk of the talk will be discussion of the impact of the environment on radio astronomy observations, and how both the physical and radio environment impacts the site. Following this I will have a brief discussion on space colonization in the near future, and how astronomers might be among the first to settle permanently in space.
