Join us on March 14th, 2024 at 7pm to dive into the world of eclipses with TSI professor Nic Cowan!
Moons, stars, and planets sometimes pass in front of each other in the sky. Over the millennia, astronomers have used such transits and eclipses to learn about the Sun’s corona, the scale of the Solar System, the size of planets orbiting other stars, and even to study their climates. In this talk, Prof. Cowan will take us on a journey through stars where we will learn about eclipses and what they are good for!
Date: Thursday, March 14th, 2024
Time: 7pm (doors open at 6:50 pm)
Location: McConnell Engineering Building room 204
Meet our speaker:
Nicolas Cowan is an associate professor in the departments of Physics and Earth & Planetary Sciences at McGill University. Nic uses telescopes on the ground and in space—and develops novel remote sensing techniques—to study the climates on extrasolar planets and understand habitability. Nic is an Arthur B. McDonald Fellow, holds a Canada Research Chair, and has been elected to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) College.
